How was Guy of Lusignan able to become king of Jerusalem?

When Baldwin IV finally succumbed to his leprosy in 1185, Baldwin V became King, but he was a sickly child and died within a year. This allowed Guy of Lusignan to take the opportunity of becoming King; it was the start of his journey to becoming king of Jerusalem. After Baldwin V died, Guy went with Sibylla to Jerusalem for his stepson’s funeral in 1186. Raymond III, who was jealous to protect his own influence and his new political ally, the dowager queen Maria Comnena, had to make arrangements to summon the Haute Cour when Sibylla was crowned queen by Patriarch Eraclius. Due to the help of Raynald of Chatillon, Sibylla was able to gain support and became extremely popular by affirming that she was “the most evident and rightful heir of the kingdom”. With clear support of the church, Sibylla was able to become undisputed sovereign. However, before she was crowned she agreed with oppositional court members that she would annul her marriage with Guy to please them only as long as she would be given free choice in her next husband. The leaders of the Haute Cour agreed, and Sibylla was crowned thereafter as queen. Her choice as husband, to the astonishment of the rival court faction, was Guy, who became King in August 1186. “Sibylla removed the crown from her head and handed it to Guy, permitting him to crown himself, in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, in September 1186”. As Bernard Hamilton writes, “there could be no doubt after the ceremony that Guy only held the crown matrimonial”. And so Guy of Lusignan in 1180 married Sibylla, sister of the leprous Baldwin IV, king of Jerusalem. When Baldwin died in 1185, Sibyl’s son by a previous marriage, the six-year-old Baldwin V, inherited the crown but died in 1186. Sibyl then became queen and, announcing her intention to choose the most worthy noble to be her husband and king, divorced Guy, only to choose him again as king and husband.
